Getting Started

The Retail Health Check: A Smarter Way to Start a Data Partnership

Most data consulting engagements follow the same pattern: a long discovery phase, weeks of integration work, and months before the first actionable insight arrives. By then, the business question that started the project may have already changed.

The Retail Health Check was designed to break that cycle. In 30 days, we map your data sources, build your first live dashboards, establish KPI baselines, and deliver 3–5 specific growth opportunities — all backed by your own data. It’s enough to demonstrate value and inform whether a longer engagement makes sense.

This article explains how the Retail Health Check works, what you’ll receive, and why we believe it’s the right way to start a data partnership.

Why We Built a 30-Day Front Door

The traditional analytics engagement asks for faith: months of onboarding and integration before the first useful screen. We built the Health Check as the opposite — a fixed, 30-day diagnostic that produces working output from your own data, so the decision to go further is based on evidence you can click, not a proposal you have to believe.

What Happens in the 30 Days

  • Week 1 — Data intake. Invoices, distributor sell-through, retailer portal exports, whatever exists. We take it as it is; cleaning what we find is part of the job, and the state of your data is itself a finding.
  • Week 2 — The model. One item master, one customer/store master, twelve months of history assembled into a single working dataset — usually the first time anyone has seen the business in one place.
  • Week 3 — Dashboards and baselines. Live dashboards on the KPIs that matter for your channels: sales vs prior year, velocity, distribution, margin by channel and customer. Baselines, so every future number has a reference.
  • Week 4 — The opportunity review. A working session, not a deck-reading: distribution voids ranked by value, assortment flags, price/margin outliers, and the two or three moves we'd make first if it were our portfolio.

What You Have at the End

Working dashboards you keep, a quantified opportunity list, and a clear read on your own data quality — deliverables with standalone value whether or not we ever speak again. No integration project, no annual commitment, no platform license.

And Then, Honestly

Three outcomes, all acceptable. Some companies take the findings and run them internally — good; the Health Check was still worth it. Some continue into the monthly analytics retainer, where the dashboards go live-refreshed and the opportunity review becomes a standing cadence. And some discover their next constraint isn't analytics at all but systems or process — in which case the wider Operbit team picks up where the diagnostic pointed. The Health Check's job is to make the next decision obvious; where it leads is up to the data.
